1. Perineal Care Products

Perineal spray or foam: These usually contain natural ingredients like aloe vera or calendula to provide a cooling and soothing effect to the perineal area.

These sprays like Dermoplast often come in convenient spray bottles, making application gentle and hassle-free.

Witch hazel pads: Witch hazel also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduct swelling and promote healing. Cooling pads like the Tucks Medicated Cooling Pads have witch hazel and provide relief from burning and itching sensations.

Peri Bottle: Since the perineum area will be pretty sensitive, you will want to stay aware from toilet paper. Use a peri bottle like this one from Frida Mom to wash after each bathroom use.

I absolutely love the Frida Mom Peri Bottle over the ones provided by the hospital because it is inverted and so easy to spray warm water for a good clean.

2. Comfortable Underwear:

You definitely will want to make sure you have a stash of High-waisted, disposable mesh underwear. These underwear types are specifically designed to accommodate postpartum pads, providing ample support without putting pressure on the healing perineal area.

The Frida Mom disposable underwear are a mom favorite and personally the ones I used after my first born.

3. Postpartum Maxi Pads:

You’ll likely experience what feels like a heavy period for the first week or weeks so a stash of maxi pads should definitely be on your list to make sure you are protected.

They also fit nicely in the disposable mesh underwear so you don’t have to worry about it feeling super uncomfortable.

4. Sitz Bath

I’ll admit that I was a little confused the first time the nurse explained how to use a sitz bath, but it literally is just a basin that fits over the toilet seat. You add warm water and sit in it for the best soothing feeling!

Sitz baths help with healing by improving blood circulation and reduce inflammation. These are usually provided at the hospital so make sure to ask for one.

5. Stool Softeners

Consult with your healthcare provider to determine the right product and dosage for your needs but usually an over-the-counter stool softener like Colace Stool Softener will do the trick.

It’s likely that you will be in pain down there so the last thing you want to worry about is added pain from doing your needs. Taking stool softeners can prevent constipation, reducing strain during bowel movement and minimizing discomfort.

C-Section Delivery

For moms who have a c-section delivery, you will also want to stock up on disposable underwear, maxi pads, in addition to the following items:

1. Abdominal Support Binder

An abdominal support binder can help reduce swelling, support the abdominal muscles, and alleviate pain around the incision site.

2. Gentle Cleansing Products

Sensitive skin wipes: Choose wipes that are hypoallergenic and free of fragrances, alcohol, and harsh chemicals to gently pat the incision area to clean without causing irritation.

Mild, fragrance-free soap: Use a soap recommended by your healthcare provider to cleanse the incision site during showers.

Be sure to rinse thoroughly and pat dry gently to aid in promoting healing and reducing the risk of infection.

3. Loose-Fitting Clothing

You’ll want to keep as much pressure away from the incision site as possible to promote healing so choose breathable fabrics like cotton and loose fits to reduce friction.

4. Pain Relief Options

Over-the-counter pain medications: Consult with your healthcare provider for suitable pain relief options. Non-prescription pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen may be recommended to manage discomfort.

Heating pad: Using a heating pad on low-heat can help soothe the abdominal area. You can place a cloth or towel between the pad and your skin to prevent burns.

5. Comfortable Sleep Setup

The goal is to be as pain-free and as comfortable as possible so ensure that you surround yourself with pillows (or your pregnancy pillow) to create a comfortable and supportive environment to promote the best sleep possible.
