This post walks through 13 small bedroom ideas to maximize space.
Is your small bedroom in need of a refresh but you’re worried about overwhelming the space?
Just because your bedroom is small does not mean it can’t be cute or aesthetically pleasing.
This is something I recently realized because of a big life change. We recently moved out of our too big of a house and moved into my mom’s older and much smaller home.
Besides having to downsize and get rid of a lot of junk I didn’t realize we even had, I have learned to appreciate small spaces and to keep things to a minimum.
By doing this and making the most of each space, we have turned our small bedroom into everything we could possibly want and need.
Here are 16 small bedroom ideas with specific examples that will breathe new life into your room, making it cozy, stylish, and functional without feeling cramped.

Small Bedroom Ideas
1. Choose Light Colors
Light colors make a room feel brighter and bigger.
The bedroom we are in now used to be a loud green with a bright blue ceiling (not sure what teenage me was thinking) – yikes!
You can easily brighten up a small bedroom and make it look much larger if you paint your walls in white or off-white colors such as Benjamin Moore’s “Simply White” or Sherwin-Williams’ “Alabaster”.
Also, choose light-colored bedding like a soft pastel blue or a crisp white duvet cover.
2. Multifunctional Furniture
Invest in furniture that serves multiple purposes.
If you need extra storage room, a bed with storage drawers may be a good idea.
Choose small nightstands that don’t take up much space and can also be used for storage.
3. Mirrors to the Rescue
Mirrors reflect light and make any space feel larger.
Try hanging a large round or square mirror above your dresser or you can also install mirrored closet doors or add a leaning full body mirror against the wall (make sure to secure if you have little ones).
4. Declutter and Organize
This is absolutely key as a small space can quickly feel overwhelmed by clutter.
You can use Marie Kondo’s KonMari method to declutter. Store seasonal clothes in under-bed storage bins and use drawer organizers for small items.
5. Minimalist Decor
Adopt a minimalist approach to decor – a small bedroom can feel overwhelming if one goes over the top by adding too much decor.
Choose a single piece of statement art above the bed or add a gallery wall with black or gold frames.
Keep surfaces clear and only display a few cherished items.
A nice book stack on your dresser or nightstand adds a polished and classy touch to your small bedroom’s decor.
Add sleek adhesive hooks to the back of your door or on the wall to hang decor or accessories.
6. Floating Shelves
Floating shelves are a great way to add storage without taking up floor space.
These give off a clean look as they are placed higher on the ceiling, therefore not taking up floor space.
Floating shelves add a cozy vibe and are very functional – you can display picture frames, books, decor, or even hang items.
7. Smart Lighting
Good lighting is crucial – it not only can completely change the mood of a space, but also make a room look larger or smaller.
Use a combination of a ceiling light and wall-mounted sconces to brighten up a small bedroom space.
For a cozy glow, you can also add string lights or fairy lights around the bed frame.
8. Under-Bed Storage
Utilize the space under your bed for extra storage.
Use flat storage bins or perhaps you may like to go for a storage bed which has large drawers for clothes and linens.
A storage bench is also a great option for storing bedding or additional clothes.
9. Compact Furniture
Choose compact and streamlined furniture.
Add a narrow dresser like the HEMNES chest from IKEA or a similar dresser, and a small bedside table that can fit snugly in tight spaces.
10. Incorporate Colors and Patterns
Incorporate patterns in small doses to add interest.
A patterned bed cover, rug, or throw pillows can add a pop of personality without overwhelming the space.
11. Open Wardrobe
If your room lacks a closet, an open wardrobe can be a stylish and practical solution.
You can use a shelf with a clothing rod attached underneath or a garment rack to hang your in-season clothing. Organize with matching hangers for a clean look.
12. Compact Seating
Choose a small, comfortable chair or a window seat with built-in storage.
Instead of a bench at the end of your bed, perhaps add a comfy chair. You can even use it to create a cozy reading nook.
Another perfect spot for a comfy chair or bench is right underneath a window.
13. Add Greenery
Plants can instantly refresh any space. Small plants like succulents in cute pots or a larger plant like a snake plant in a corner can add life to your room.
Hang a few trailing plants in macrame holders from the ceiling to draw the eye upward.
By incorporating these ideas you can transform your small bedroom into a refreshing and inviting retreat.
Remember, less is often more in small spaces, so focus on creating a balanced and harmonious environment.
